Lost in the Fray (Pt. 3 Like Father, Like Son)

"I got another call from your school today about your attendance," Scott addressed Doug as soon as he got in the house. It was 2 o'clock, he'd been at the graveyard longer than he thought. Scott stopped him, "you can't keep skipping school. You'll never graduate at this rate." He tried sounding like their father, it boiled Doug's blood.

"Why does it matter to you what I do anyway?" Doug's voice floated out of his mouth, as if his lungs were just as apathetic as his mind.

Scott became defensive and angry quick, "because I'm taking care of you! You can't just be a bum!" He sounded even more like their father. Doug glared at him and pushed him out of the way.

"You aren't dad, Scott! Quit trying to be." Doug headed for his room. He'd felt a little better from spending time with his grandfather but this brought him back down again. Scott tried to stop him by grabbing his arm. He spun around and pushed him off.

"Fucking get off me!" Doug yelled freeing himself from his older brothers grasp. Scott dropped back as if he was going to hit him. Doug just stood there staring, waiting for it. The two of them stood silent for what seemed like an hour to Doug.

"Do whatever you want, I don't give a shit. But if you want to eat you're getting a job. I'm not babying you anymore." Scott turned and went downstairs leaving Doug in the hallway alone.

Doug just stood there staring at the floor. Nothing had changed, he thought. Even though his father was in jail he still had to live with him.

"Why couldn't they just leave me alone?" Doug sighed to himself and slide into his room and under the covers. He couldn't handle anymore fighting or yelling or people checking up on him. He couldn't handle anymore of today. He turned on his stereo and just lay there. Thinking about his mother. Tears started to well up in his eyes. He let them come, his grandfather once told him crying was all the bad things leaving you. Doug new know that it wasn't true but it did make him feel a little better.

"I can't stay here tomorrow," Doug whispered to himself, "I guess I will talk to Julia at school...maybe." Doug rolled over again and fell asleep with two women on his mind. Hopefully this nap would help.
